The Global Corporate Solutions Translation and Interpretation Unit (GCSTI) of the World Bank provides a wide range of language services to its internal clients. Its highly trained in-house language professionals are located at headquarters in Washington DC and in regional country offices around the world. The Extended Term Consultant (ETC) Russian<>Tajik<>English Translator and Interpreter is based in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. He/she reports to the Russian Team Leader in Moscow, Russian Federation, and works closely with Project Coordinators in Moscow, Almaty and HQ.

Candidates will be required to pass a written translation test and a simultaneous interpretation test in a virtual platform (KUDO or Zoom).

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Produce self-revised translations of a wide range of World Bank documents, ensuring their accuracy, completeness, consistency, stylistic acceptability, and on-schedule delivery. Translations may be of a sensitive or confidential nature and are frequently on short notice.
  • Research each source document thoroughly, fully using translation aid tools and systems available in order to ensure that the appropriate specialized terminology is employed. 
  • Revise translations produced by freelance translators. 
  • Check the content and the format of documents translated following computer-assisted processing if applicable. 
  • Support terminology development work. 
  • Communicate with other translators working on the same document or subject, ensuring consistency of style and terminology in the final products. 
  • Communicate with clients on documents translated and delivered. 
  • Interpret in consecutive and simultaneous mode during events and meetings.

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum Master’s degree with five years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred: Degree in Translation/Interpretation or Post-graduate Degree in Translation, Interpretation, Economics, Finance, Law or Social Sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Russian and Tajik as primary languages (i.e., native-level ability) or mother tongues. 
  • Near native proficiency of English. 
  • Proficiency in the use of relevant standard software packages, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. 
  • Proficiency in the use of web-based terminology and reference tools. 
  • Proficiency in the use of CAT Tools, ideally SDL Trados and Group share, as well as use and maintenance of translation memories. 
  • Proven experience in consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.
  • Experience using virtual interpretation platforms, such as Kudo or Zoom.
  • Ability to work under very tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Specialized knowledge in fields such as public finance, accounting, law, or the social sciences are an asset.
